WELCOME TO
“Third World” is a term once used to described the non-aligned nations of the Cold War, those that aimed to remain independent from either Western or Eastern powers. With time, it came to describe the places that provide the labor and resources global capitalism depends upon — the people at the periphery of its order, deprived of the wealth of its imperial core.
As a child, it troubled me that living in the Third World was seen as something to be ashamed of, escaped at any cost. If there had been many worlds, I thought, then surely our Third must know something the other two did not!
Less-developed, underdeveloped, North/South, or worst of all, the paternalistic “developing”. The euphemisms that describe this relationship of violence are ever-changing. But this idea of many worlds is pervasive for a reason: it describes a hidden truth. That every day we play a game of hopscotch between places of sense, understandings, mysteries. And so I thought of worlds I am always in-between, dreaming about, writing about.
The first world, the thing itself. The second world, interface. And the third world of the subject. Thus is the theme of this website. Neither the ball nor the field can possibly know what a player might do. Time and again, it falls to us to do the kicking.
THIRD WORLD is a site covering games, media, and whatever I feel like talking about. I’m hoping this can be a place to muse aloud about what I’m feeling, and I hope you’ll join me too. New articles whenever. Stay tuned.
